KEDUNGU SURF SPOT
Kedungu beach : perfect for surf lessons in Bali
First of all, Kedungu Beach is known for being a surf spot. Located 15min from Canggu, it offers perfect waves for learning or improving your surf as the surf spot gives 3 break points. It’s easy to access to Kedungu Beach, it’s located at the very end of Jalan pantai kedungu and like many other places in Bali, you’ll have to pay 2 000 IDR for scooter access and 5 000 IDR for car access. Down there, a big parking, toilets, showers and warungs are waiting for you to make your visit more comfortable. Some hotels and restaurants are open everyday in Kedungu village.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL
To begin, don’t forget safety surf rules in the water. Follow the tides as Kedungu surf spot doesn’t work all the time, and the safety rules. If you are a beginner it’s safer to go with a surf teacher.
You’ll find 3 break points in Kedungu beach
THE MAIN PEAK
Straight in front of the shops/warungs, the main peak of kedungu is a consistent A frame wave. It means the peak makes 2 surfing directions : Left & Right . So goofy or regular (right feet in front – left feet in front) you can practice both your front side and back side surf skills. It sometimes creates a nice second section perfect for longboards. Both waves are quite similar about the steep, speed, angle, curve and power. However the right one is shorter because it meets the 2nd break point, the left one is longer because it ends up in the channel.
It is an advanced wave: shoulder heigh, not too fast not too slow, and different ways to drop in: at the lip (steeper, faster, more powerful) or at the shoulder (less steep, slower, less powerful), perfect for intermediate who wants to improve their surf skills like bottom turns, top turns, cut back, … or crazy fearless beginners!
TIPS : Use the big tree on the parking as referral for keeping the right position at the main peak.
THE FRONT CLIFF PEAK
On the left side of the beach, another wave, a fast, steep and powerful left working only with perfect swell conditions. It breaks (my surf board once) in front of Kedungu beach cliff around 60m from the beach (show your paddling skills).
Advanced & experienced surfers only for this reef wave, it makes barrels with big swell and low tide conditions.
THE BEGINNER WAVE
Even if the front cliff peak wave is not working clean all the time, its power always make a second section at around 25m from the beach. This new wave makes a long and consistent foam, a perfect playground for beginners to discover the slide feeling and the power of the ocean.
There is also the Loloan: the shore break, favorite afternoon spot for locals! This beach break is in front of the left main peak wave, its a hip heigh really fast, short, steep and powerful wave. Advanced & experienced surfers only for this wave , it makes small barrels, it can turns like a face plank on the hard sand of the shore and end it up on kook of the day! Perfect conditions are from mid tide to high tide.
Pangkung Tibah beach is accessible and visible from Kedungu beach. Also know as PT or MotoCross Kedungu (I don’t know why some people call it that way), you’ll see off the coast, 80m from the beach,(…show again your paddling skills) a short, fat & fast left wave. Only working during big swell (8ft-12ft), this deep wave is heavy, only for advanced & fearless surfers.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL
If you are a beginner without surf teacher, don’t forget ocean is more powerful than us, you don’t want to hurt yourself. Don’t try to go on a too complicated wave if you can’t handle it, be careful of the shore break when you enter or go out, at high tide the shore break is massive (we often see a 2,5m high shore break during high tide!!!). When you begin, it’s safer to start learning with a surf teacher.
Safety first
CHANNELS
When there is wave, there is channel… well, we surfers hope there is. It’s a current without waves which is dragging you to the peak. The big one is in front of the temple on your right when your facing the spot. During small conditions, a second channel appears in front of the big stairs of Kedungu beach.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL
Don’t act like a kook ! Please use channels to go to the peaks, for safety and respect. There are rules in the water. If you don’t use channels, you’ll be in the middle of someone’s ride or you’ll get smashed by the waves.
Safety first, a fin or board on your head is painful & dangerous.
KEDUNGU SURF SHACK / BOARD RENTAL
As soon as you’ll arrive on the parking, you’ll see a dozen of shops & warungs. Almost at the end, you won’t miss it, there is Kedungu Surf Shack & Board Rental. A business created in 2016 by 8 locals from Kedungu: Bolu, Cok, Kadek, Kaduk, Lenges, Silo, Unyl & Me. 6 of us are surf teachers, Kadek is an amazing ding repair & board shaper, Kaduk handles the administrative part. You can rent boards (soft top, hard boards, longboards, short boards, malibu, mini malibu, fish,…) starting from 50k for 2h, 100k for one day, 500k for one week. Surf lessons are also available with Bolu, Cok, Lenges, Silo, Unyl & Me (if you book lesson straight to the surf shack, your surf teacher will depend on our schedule/availability).
Since summer 2019, we now propose you surf pictures with Kedungu Surf Photography, surf pictures from the sand or in the water. Prices start at 50k.
